Curriculum

Four topics

The specialisation consists in four topics for a total 60 validated ECTS:
  • nanophysics (courses given in French)
  • The purpose here is to provide students with courses in fundamental physics with regard to the study of the phenomena and concepts induced by the extreme smallness of size structures. It consists of two major topics: fundamental physics and nanoscientific methodologies;
  • nanodevices and nanotechnologies (courses given in French)
  • Here, the focus is put on various couplings between physics, chemistry, the materials and biology in order to provide a very multidisciplinary approach and deal with nanosciences through applications by relying on well-established fundamental data;
  • nanochemistry (courses given in French)
  • The purpose here is to address the problems associated with the synthesis, characterisation and use of functional molecules and nanostructures.
  • international track in nanosciences (courses given in English).

All topics share a common trunk consisting of two academic units in order not only to understand, but mostly to put in practice relevant methods for developing and characterising nanostructures, with a special emphasis on essential microscopy techniques in that field.

General organisation

Nanophysics Track (J.-J. Greffet)

The Nanophysics Track has a dual vocation: first, it includes a common core of general advanced physics (Matter-Radiation Interaction, Quantum Optics, Non-equilibrium Statistical Physics, Condensed-matter Physics) covering the major concepts of Physics of Solid State and of Quantified Fields. Furthermore, it facilitates initiation to the entire series of disciplines pertaining to Physics at the nanometric scale (Spintronics, Mesoscopic Physics, Nanophotonics, Nanomaterials), as well as to observation and fabrication techniques at the nanometric scale via two experimental modules.

The track consists of 10 mandatory modules, two optional modules (at the student’s discretion) and a training period of 18 weeks.

Nanodevice and Nanotechnology Track (Delphine Morini)

The Nanodevice and Nanotechnology Track is intended for students wishing to study Nanosciences through their applications. Hence, it proposes a conceptual and technological approach not only in engineering sciences (Physics, Communication Technologies, Chemistry, Materials), but also in Biosciences and Biotechnologies.

It consists of 10 mandatory academic modules (including two common-core ones) for the entire student force of that track, thus allowing them to acquire solid bases in nanodevices (Optics, Electronics, Mechanics, Chemistry, Biology), optional improvement modules in Basic Physics, Materials, Biotechnologies and clean-room work (two optional modules) and a training period of 18 weeks.

Nanochemistry Track (T. Mallah)

The purpose of the Nanochemistry Track of the Nanoscience Master-2 is to provide students with a comprehensive training in the modern fields of Nanomaterials, Molecular Materials and Nanoitems, forming a significant part of the major challenges of Nanosciences. The training covers several aspects, from the design itself to the sound understanding of physical properties, via the characterisation and development of systems at the nanometric scale.

Twelve modules are proposed (including two common-core ones pertaining to the selected speciality) and 10 specific modules of the Nanochemistry Track.

This track includes 9 mandatory academic modules (including two common-core ones), 8 optional models (at the student’s discretion) and a training period of 18 weeks.
